On the occasion of the 20th anniversary celebration of the CLCS the President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea delivered a speech entitled: The relevance and importance of the work of the Commission to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea


Ms Ximena Hinrichs elected Deputy Registrar of the Tribunal

On 15 March 2017, the Judges of the Tribunal elected Ms Ximena Hinrichs, of Chilean nationality, Deputy Registrar of the Tribunal.


Members of the Tribunal visit GEOMAR

The judges of the Tribunal visited the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research.

Based in Kiel, Germany, GEOMAR is one of the world's leading institutes in the field of marine sciences. Prof. Dr. Peter Herzig, Director of GEOMAR, welcomed the members and gave a presentation on the difficulties of deep seabed mining, the exploration and exploitation of polymetallic nodules, sustainability and environmentally responsible behaviour as well as legal questions that arise.
A visit on board the Research Vesse! ALKOR and to the GEOMAR Aquarium concluded the visit to GEOMAR.


Tribunal holds regional workshop in Costa Rica

The twelfth regional workshop of the Tribunal is being held in San José, Costa Rica. The workshop is devoted to “The role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the settlement of disputes relating to the law of the sea in the Central American and Caribbean Regions”, and is organized in cooperation with the Government of Costa Rica and with the financial support of the Korea Maritime Institute.


President's annual report to the Meeting of States Parties

Judge Golitsyn, President of the Tribunal, presented the Tribunal’s annual report for 2016 to the 27th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.


Election of seven Members of the Tribunal

Seven Members of the Tribunal were elected at the twenty-seventh Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, in session at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The judges were elected for a term of nine years commencing on 1 October 2017.

The States Parties re-elected the following two Members: Judge Boualem Bouguetaia (Algeria) and JudgeJosé Luís Jesus (Cabo Verde). In addition, the Meeting elected Mr Oscar Cabello Sarubbi (Paraguay), Ms Neeru Chadha (India), Mr Kriangsak Kittichaisaree (Thailand), MrRoman Kolodkin (Russian Federation),and Ms Liesbeth Lijnzaad (The Netherlands).


The Government of Argentina donates a model of the ARA Libertad to the Tribunal

The captain of the ARA Libertad, Comandante Fernando Maglione, and the Consul General of Argentina in Hamburg, Mr Fernando Brun, visited the Tribunal on 5 July 2017 together with members of the crew of the ARA Libertad, which is currently docked in the port of Hamburg. On the occasion of the XXth anniversary of the Tribunal, a model of the ARA Libertad was donated to the Tribunal by the Government of Argentina.

President Golitsyn participates as a panelist of the 2nd plenary session “Trends in International Adjudication”


Tribunal signs MOU with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

On behalf of the Tribunal, President Vladimir Golitsyn signed a Memorandum of Understanding today with Professor Peter Herzig, Director of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel


Swearing-in Ceremony

At a public sitting held on 2 October 2017 Mr Óscar Cabello Sarubbi (Paraguay), Ms Neeru Chadha (India), Mr Kriangsak Kittichaisaree (Thailand), Mr Roman Kolodkin (Russian Federation), and Ms Liesbeth Lijnzaad (The Netherlands) were sworn in as judges of the Tribunal.


President Paik makes his first address to the United Nations General Assembly

Judge Jin-Hyun Paik addressed the plenary of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly under agenda item 77(a) "Oceans and the Law of the Sea".

President Paik pays courtesy call on Secretary-General António Guterres

Judge Jin-Hyun Paik, President of the Tribunal, paid a courtesy call on the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr António Guterres, at his offices in New York on 7 December 2017. He was accompanied by the Registrar of the Tribunal, Mr Philippe Gautier.
