The Tribunal's first newsletter for 2022 is now available.


ITLOS – Nippon Foundation Capacity Building and Training Programme 2022-2023

The deadline for submissions has been extended to 30 April 2022!

The Tribunal is pleased to announce the launch of its 2022-2023 capacity-building and training programme on dispute settlement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which is organized with the support of the Nippon Foundation. The programme is aimed at junior to mid-level government officials and researchers who are currently working on issues related to the law of the sea, maritime law or dispute settlement.

The 16th edition of the programme is scheduled to start on 18 July 2022 and end on 31 March 2023. The new application deadline is 30 April 2022.


15th ITLOS Regional Workshop opens in Malta

On 2 June 2022, Judge Albert Hoffmann, President of the Tribunal, opened the fifteenth regional workshop in Malta dedicated to “The Role of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Settlement of Disputes relating to the Law of the Sea”.


President Hoffmann’s statement to the thirty-second meeting of States Parties to UNCLOS

On 13 June 2022, President Albert Hoffmann presented his statement to the thirty-second Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.


Inaugural ITLOS Workshop for Legal Advisers (sponsored by the Republic of Korea)

On 11 September 2022, Judge Albert Hoffmann, President of the Tribunal, opened the inaugural ITLOS Workshop for Legal Advisers (sponsored by the Republic of Korea) on the premises of the Tribunal in Hamburg.

Dispute concerning delimitation of the maritime boundary between Mauritius and Maldives in the Indian Ocean

The public hearing concluded on 24 October 2022. The Special Chamber will now deliberate on the case.

The M/T “Heroic Idun” Case (Marshall Islands v. Equatorial Guinea), Prompt Release: Case Removed From Tribunal’s List

On 15 November 2022, by Order of the President of the Tribunal, Judge Albert Hoffmann, the M/T “Heroic Idun” Case (Marshall Islands v. Equatorial Guinea), Prompt Release, was removed from the Tribunal’s list of cases.


President Hoffmann commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the adoption of UNCLOS

President Hoffmann addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations today at a plenary meeting dedicated to the commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the adoption and opening for signature of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.


President Hoffmann’s annual report to the General Assembly

President Albert Hoffmann addressed the United Nations General Assembly today, giving his annual review of the work of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea during the Assembly’s consideration of agenda item 72(a) “Oceans and the law of the sea”.
